Spelling investigations
This term we are moving away from a set list of spellings and instead I would like your child to investigate a particular spelling pattern.
Please discuss the pattern with your child including any patterns they spot and any possible exceptions. Words could be found in a variety of books, already known words and the dictionary (although this may not always be the best option).
Spellings will be tested throughout the term in dictations.
Week 1: Find words where the following prefixes can be added
dis-, de-, re-, pre-, mis-, over-.
Can the root words use more than one of the prefixes?
behave- misbehave
design -redesign
How does the prefix change the meaning of the root word?
What is the meaning of the prefix?
Week 2: Use suffixes –ate, -ise, -ify to convert nouns and adjectives into verbs
Similar to week one find a variety of words that use the above suffixes. How has the suffixes changed the root word?
vaccine- vaccinate
Week 3: Write a list of words that end in –ably and – ibly.
Is there a pattern? How do you know whether to use –ably or –ibly
enjoyable sensibly
Week 4: Compare words that end in –ant, –ance/–ancy, and –ent, –ence/–ency.
