Ancient Greece

Select three of the follow tasks. You can bring your work in as you complete it.

All three must be completed by Friday 10th of June.

 

1) Make a name plaque written in Greek letters

Such as ‘Paul’s Rom’ or ‘Home Sweet Home’

You could use card, clay or paper.

2)Choose a Greek Myth 

Create your own comic strip of the myth.

3) Research the Ancient Olympics:

Why did the Greeks hold the Olympic Games?

What events took place in the Olympic Games and who took part?

What are the main similarities and differences between the Olympic Games then and now? Present your findings as an information text.

4) What was life like for Athenian children compared to Spartan children?

What was school like in Ancient Athens?

You could write a diary entry as a child in Athens, Sparta or both.

 

5) Find the names of five Greek inventors.

Research what they did and present your work as a poster.

 

6) Create a Greek gods fact file.

 

7) The myths and legends of ancient Greece include various strange creatures and monsters partly based on real animals that existed.

Invent your own monster – this can be made out of junk materials, clay, card or collage.

 

8)Create a Greek menu for a dinner party.

 

9)Make a Greek theatre mask.

 

10) Prepare an illustrated talk for the class on Greek clothes, buildings, transport, food or theatre.

This half term I would like you to regularly watch and read the news.

The First News paper and programmes such as Newsround are a good starting point.

 

Think about what kind of articles interest you.

Are the reports from around the world, the UK or local?

 

Select one thing of interest to report on and create your own news report.

Week 1 and 2-

Celebrations Around the Globe

Use the internet, local library, or ask knowledgeable people to find out enough information to make a leaflet called ‘Celebrating Around the Globe’.

You should aim it at an audience of young people, and your purpose is to inform.

Week 3-

Family celebrations

  • Interview a member of your family about an important family celebration e.g. you could interview a grandparent about his/her golden wedding celebration.
  • Research to find out what each wedding anniversary means and design a present for each one e.g. a paper anniversary would have a present with a paper theme.

Week 4-

Sporting events

Choose a major sporting events.

  • Describe in exciting detail the championship game involved and how the win is celebrated.
  • Think of 5 other sports. Which country is usually associated with it ? [ e.g. baseball – America.] Which music and food would you associate with each sport ?

Week 5-

 Invent your own winter festival !

  • Invent a non-religious winter festival with its own traditions, food, music, animal, symbol, decoration, costume and date.
  • Think of a good name for it e.g. Winterval.

Week 6-

Design a card for your winter festival

Week 7-

Tuesday 15/12/15 bring your homework into school and be ready to present your project.

Autumn 1 Homework Project

This half term in year 5 our topic 'Out of this World'. Here is a selection of activities with a space theme. Your mission is to complete  6 challenges of your choice.

Each activity is different and will require you to use different skills. You may present your six activities in any way you choose.

1. Create your own space themed top trumps cards.

2.  You  are  going on a spaceship  and  can only take  10  things  with you. What will you take? Either write or draw them in your suitcase.

You are going to meet some aliens on another planet. What 10 things would you take as presents for them? Draw them in a gift box.

3. Make an acrostic for one of the planets

This could be a list of words beginning with each letter, a sentence for each line or even a rhyme.

4. Find out facts about the space missions –

         What was the first creature sent into space?

       Who was the first astronaut?

       Who was the first man on the moon?

What other interesting facts can you find?

5. Bake your own space themed cookies or biscuits. They could be star, rocket or planet shaped. They could even include space rocks such as popping candy!   Write the recipe in your homework jotter. Feel free to share your biscuits with your teacher!!

 6. Make a 3D model rocket with a parachute to aid re-entry.

7. Keep a sky at night journal for a whole week.  Write about everything you  can see in the sky. You could draw a picture of the moon every night. Does it change over the course of the week?

8. Prepare a lesson to teach the class about an aspect of Space you enjoy (Be ready to teach it!)

9. Design an alien (look to the natural word for features) and create an alien mask.

10. Create a timeline to show the history of space travel.

11. Complete a character study of Neil Armstrong or any other famous astronaut/ cosmonaut.

12. Write newspaper report about the first moon landing.

13. Create a new mnemonic that will help others in the class remember the names of the planets and their order from the sun.

14. Use scrap paper, foil, sweet wrappers and other junk around the house to create your own space collage.

15. Make a space mobile that you could hang in the classroom.
